Dr. Kates is a clinical nephrologist, practicing in Kelowna since 1998. He is the former Head, Kelowna General Hospital Division of Nephrology and The Regional Transplant Clinic

Dr. Kates received his medical training at the University of British Columbia, and then completed a medical internship at McGill. He went on to do a Residency in Internal Medicine at UBC, while at the same time finishing a Masters in Health Sciences (clinical epidemiology).  He completed 2.5 years of subspecialty training in Nephrology at the University of Washington, where he was also awarded the 1994-96 American Kidney Fund National Clinical Scientist Fellowship, focussing on cardiovascular disease in kidney patients.

Dr. Kates provides full Nephrology care, with a special interest in cardiovascular disease in kidney patients, metabolic disorders, osteoporosis, and hypertension. He also practices Internal Medicine, and teaches diving medicine.

In addition to his professional activities, Dr. Kates enjoys sports, music and time with his family.
